2018 doesn’t suck so far

I’m now the proud owner of a 2300 sq ft Victorian-style home in Central Gardens, a neighborhood in the heart of Memphis. It’s a zero lot and gated community with a total of four homes. I’ve been told that a very large home used to be on this lot and was torn down to make way for these to be built. I’m close to Overton Square and Cooper Young, and just minutes from downtown. Unfortunately, I’m farther from work but I love living here.

My son and his wife moved in last August while they’re finishing up school. Stephen should finish in August, his wife will finish in May of 2019. They’ve found an apartment close to Shelby Farms, and the balcony faces out on the dog park. I’m a little sad about them leaving but also happy for them. I think their menagerie (two cats and a dog) will be happy about the large outdoor space.

My daughter, Samantha, and her husband, Adam, have been in their own apartment since last June or so, and seem very happy. They bring Zelda over to play with Cosmo sometimes or just meet at the dog park. They live about a mile from it, so it’s very convenient. Samantha is graduating from nursing school on May 25th! Her dad and I are very proud of her.

I’ve been divorced now for about a year and a half. I still have conflicted emotions about all that and how it went down. It’s easy to want to blame my ex for a lot of things but I’m not naive enough to think that I had no fault in all of it. We had 32 years together and it’s just going to take awhile to not feel sad and wonder all the “what ifs.” My family has been very supportive, along with my friends and co-workers. I admit to regretting not going to counseling with my ex, to be able at least to say that we really tried everything before going through all that, before putting my kids and family through all that. In the end, I think it’s safe to say that we grew apart over the years, and had different ideas for the future. And that’s all I’m going to say about that. I prefer to look forward from now on!

Stay tuned for more posts about dating after being married for most of my life lol!

On another note, our backyard looks so beautiful! My husband had cut our azaleas back at the wrong time the first year we lived in this house, and it’s taken them a couple of years to recuperate.

Busy

Hopefully what our pool will look similar to!

Pool

So, I’ve been pretty busy with getting used to being less busy. The transition to empty nest has been…eye-opening, to say the least. My life for the last 20 years has revolved around taking care of my kids, and being a mom. I think that’s what I’m having a hard time with, is trying to figure out my purpose now. Work has always been fairly enjoyable, but it was to get money to do things with and for my kids. After having a couple of weeks of depression, crying, mood-swings, afternoon drinking on my days off, and sitting around my house, I feel better, and I still have a husband. Ha! He’s really had to put up with a lot of emotions spewing from me and I hope feeling like that is done!

We are going to actually, finally, have our pool area redone and I’m so excited!! I’ve waited through four summers for my husband to finally be ready to cough up some money (OUR money) to make our backyard a pleasant place to hang out and have friends over. The pool has been a bit of an albatross the last two summers because of an undetectable leak and then the guinite becoming stained. We used so many chemicals trying to fix the staining with my husband refusing to actually pay someone who might know what they’re doing and it’s been such a frustration. Tim has actually saved us quite a bit of money being a DIY-er with many projects around the house; the pool has not been one of them!

We got estimates this week, looked a lot of pictures and went and saw a made-over pool in person this morning. This is a photo of what we are going for:

We won’t have the waterfall but the border will be the flagstone with pea gravel decking. The guinite will be re-plastered a gray color that would hide staining if it occurred. The plan is to switch over to salt water, too, one of my requests to my husband two years ago.

I say all this to say, as long as I’m busy, I’m doing fine. I just have to take time to find what I want to be busy with now that being a mom isn’t requiring so much time. Maybe this pool makeover will inspire me on to some of the other places in our house that could use some attention. We’ll see!

Felted project

August 5, 2012 Leave a comment

I’m making myself finish some projects that I’ve already started before getting seriously embarked on some new involved one. I had crocheted most of a potholder and ran out of the brown wool. Luckily, I have lots of other yarns to choose from in my stash (is there some other word to call all the yarn that’s sitting in my yarn closet, I don’t really like the word “stash”), and got a dark blue wool to finish it off. It’s a little fuzzier than the brown, but I would feel guilty buying new…

So, I finished the crochet part and the felting tonight. It’s now drying. Tomorrow I’ll hopefully do the “decorative blanket stitch” around the edges. I guess I’ll still do it in the brick red I had picked out. Of course, I could go with the dark blue to keep it more blended looking. I’ll just see which I like best. Oh, and I also threw in a bracelet I had knitted some time ago that needed felting. It was a really quick project to knit and would make a good stocking stuffer for my teenage nieces. I’ll have to do another one soon.

The crickets are loud outside tonight. I live in a suburban neighborhood, but it sounds like the deep woods. Crickets somehow manage to get in my bathroom all the time and used to scare me in my middle of the night bathroom treks. Now I’m used to them, but darned if I know how they get in my bathroom! I can’t find any cracks for them to crawl through. Weird.

I love my street and the way it looks with all the tall trees. It winds around to my house and it makes me happy to look at it. I painted the dark orange shutters chocolate brown last fall and it was a vast improvement, as you might imagine! I had people who were on their daily walk commenting on how good it looked. Made me smile!

Tomorrow the plan is to get up for a run, then go to worship, then finish my potholder. I really need to plan out some meals and do some grocery shopping, too. Fun stuff that I have to force myself to do. I prefer going out so someone else can clean up! : )
